What to do while you wait

Gas smell

Open windows, do not touch light switches, leave the building, then ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 before you ring us.

Burst pipe

Turn off the stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and open the cold taps to drain the system. Move anything electrical away from the water.

No heating or hot water

Check the boiler pressure gauge is between 1 and 1.5 bar and the thermostat has batteries. If neither helps, ring; most of these are a one-visit fix.

Electrics tripping

Reset the consumer unit once. If it trips again, leave it off and ring — a repeating trip is telling you something.
